In 1910, the Government of Japan decided to appoint Mr Julius Otto Jeppe, who was at the time living in Cape Town, as the honorary consul of Japan in South Africa. The nomination was made to ensure the status of Japan and Japanese citizens in South Africa as well as to promote trade with South Africa.

Mr. Jeppe was a Briton of German decent, resident in South Africa and engaged in trade and maritime affairs. He worked as the honorary consul of Japan from 1910 until 1918 at an office located in Short Market Street in Cape Town. Moreover, he pioneered the exporting of South African wool to Japan and introduced Cape wines to East Asia, contributing as such to strengthening the relationship between Japan and South Africa. In 1916, Mr. Jeppe paid a courtesy call to the then Taisho Emperor and received the golden cup for his contributions.

2010 marks the one hundred years since the appointment of Mr. Jeppe as the honorary consul.

This just one of a lifetime's worth of amazing things I could tell you about Jeppe High School for Boys.

If you are interested please ask me for more.

We are implementing ITIL at the moment, from the first day of the training course I thought it was a load of crap and i'm still of that opinion now.

2 Years later they are still trying to make it stick / work, all we have acheived so far is renaming the help desk to "Service Desk"

Glad i'm not the only one who thinks its crap

Need we say any more....

My father was born Francois Louis Biccard Pentz in South Africa, his grandfather Louis Biccard, who had two brothers, Willie and Joshua.
Joshua Biccard went to Australia after the Boer War I think.
With all the familiar names of Carl Louis and Joshua Biccard in your family, just wondered if you know the history of your ancestors from South Africa?
Would love to hear if there is a connection between our families.

ITIL is junk
example 1:
user logs a call on service desk. service desk decide they can't or won't do the work so its gets passed to 2nd line
2nd line watch the call arrive in their stack
2nd line engineer has to assign call to himself from team stack
2nd line have to "acknowledge" the call (add a call note saying 'ack')
2nd line have write what they plan to do about this call.
Since every call will involve calling the user to fix their problem, every call has 3 call notes added to it
+ "assign to XXX"
+ "acknowledge"
+"I will call the user"

when 1 would do.

example 2:
ok i have a user who wants to access a website on an odd port number.
he logs an "incident"
I have to log a "change" and fill in the form
+ Who am i/ contact etc
+ What i want the change to be called
+ What I want to happen
+ who i want to do the work on the firewall

I then have to forward the form to the firewall team to detail how they are going to do the change. Once they have filled in how they're are going to do the change i then have to forward the form back to them to say "this is how i want you to do it"

All this monitored by a non technical change team who haven't a clue how anything works or its impact. the form will get forwarded around a few departments to make sure it won't have any undesired effects. But these will probably not be the correct departments ( my department does not normally get copies)
Since I fill the form in and the firewall team do the work, what do the change team actually do???

Today was my last day as a Matric at Jeppe High School for boys... I have never fully realized why there is so much pride centered around the School by the old boys until this day. After 5 amazing years, I have nothing negative to say about the school, the boys or the teachers.

It saddens me greatly that i will never put on my black and white blazer again to physically go to school and be a Jeppe boy.

Forti Nihil Difficilius!

I'm studying ITIL v3 Foundation, and having been in IT for 15 years, am finding it a complete waste of time and effort.

The study material is simply pages and pages of terminology; lists within lists within lists; bullet points within bullet points within bullet points.

Most of it is commonsense.

I think this was developed for the public sector simply to create jobs for people.

Just at the moment I´m working at a large family tree of the
Jeppe family
There is one person missing
Friedrich Wilhelm Jeppe, born May, 25, 1815 in Grebenstein
at that time Kurfürstentum Hessen-Kassel, he is mentioned as
emigrated to South Africa, without any knowledge about him and his
further fate
The Jeppe from Lower Saxony had a branch here in Northern Hessen
starting with Chritoph Jeppe, b. 1695, d. 1768
a farm manager in Burguffeln, an baronial, then state estate.
Best wishes
Gustaf Eichbaum
chairman, Northern Hessen genealogical society, GFKW

What a pleasure to see some of the names of boys I remember well from my days at Jeppe. I was a boarder from 1962 to 1972 in both Mpiti and Oribi.
I remember well teachers like Sid Thomas, Scotch Mc leod, Taffy, that awful Schoeman, the lovely Monica Eva and the evergreen Bonkie Silburn, to name but a few.
Who can ever forget Taffy's Camp...?? Mike Robbertze, I bet you remember us hiking from Scottburugh to Shelly Beach to visit Caroline Tipper...??

To Simon Ward, Mike Grispos, Mike Robbetze, Stewie Johnstone, Graham Rye, David Thompson, Gavin du Plessis ( and your brother 'Monster')....all small but significant pieces of the tapestry of my life. I greet you all.
